On the origin of Where the Wild Things Are:

The original title was Where the Wild Horses Are. I loved the title, and she loved the title. It was very evocative. The only problem was, I drew horses so very badly that it couldn’t be published that way. It took a period of time to determine what the Wild Things were—what they looked like, what they sounded like. It seemed to take quite a time, and I began to lose hope, thinking that this was just a nice title. But finally it became Where the Wild Things Are, and that was a brilliant discovery because “things” could be any thing, and there was certainly some thing I could draw well.

Inspiration for today...... trail run at dawn in Westwoods

(The ceiling fresco by Guido Reni, done in 1613-1614, depicts Aurora, the Roman goddess of dawn as she leads the sun god Apollo on his chariot and surrounded by the Horae, in bringing daylight into the world. The original painting does not compare at all with the dark and murky online versions. The light and billowing robes of both Aurora and the Horae are in colorful pastel shades that are almost ephemeral and arouse in the viewer a sense of wonder and delight in this light that Aurora brings into the world. Note the seaside village on the right corner below - its blue creates a perfect foil for the exploding yellows and orange of daybreak. This painting show quite remarkable restraint on the part of Reni and his hand in this period of Baroque!)

Roman mythology

In ancient Roman mythologyAurora, goddess of the dawn, renews herself every morning and flies across the sky, announcing the arrival of the sun. Her parentage was flexible: for Ovid she could equally be Pallantis, signifying the daughter ofPallas,^[1] or the daughter of Hyperion.^[2] She has two siblings, a brother (Sol, the sun) and a sister (Luna, the moon), and four children (theAnemoi, or Winds.)

Aurora appears most often in Latin poetry with one of her mortal lovers. A myth taken from the Greek Eos by Roman poets tells that one of her lovers was the prince of Troy,Tithonus. Tithonus was a mortal, and would age and die. Wanting to be with her lover for all eternity, Aurora asked Zeusto grant immortality to Tithonus. Zeus granted her wish, however Aurora had failed to ask him for eternal youth. As a result, Tithonus ended up aging eternally. Aurora ended up turning her beloved Tithonus into a grasshopper.

This is an incredible documentary about a teacher, Mr. Kanamori, who encourages his 4th grade students to share their feelings and teaches them that their goal in life is to be happy. Very touching, and likely to make you tear up (especially part 4).

Dirk Auer skates down 860 metre roller coaster in just 60 seconds... jump more watch it in action!
"An adrenaline junkie has taken in-line skating to new heights and set a new world record after racing down a roller coaster at speeds of 56mph.
Dirk Auer decided to go where no sane man or woman had gone before and skated down an 860 metre track in just over a minute.
Wearing specially designed in-line skates, the German made the attempt on the Mammoth roller coaster at the Trips Drill theme park in Stuttgart...
"The roller caster is wooden and so unlike rides made from iron and steel there was always a chance of the odd nail or screw that would not be entirely flat.
If the skates were to catch a stray nail then I could have fallen and I would almost certainly have died. " 36-year-old Dirk Auer said.

"Yellow Submarine" art director dies

(AP) – 3 hours ago

STUTTGART, Germany — Graphic designer Heinz Edelmann, best known for his work as art director of the 1968 Beatles film "Yellow Submarine," has died, his former employer said. He was 75.

Edelmann died Tuesday afternoon in a Stuttgart hospital, according to the city's State Academy of Art and Design, where he had worked as a professor until 1999. No cause of death was given.

Born in Aussig in the former Czechoslovakia in 1934, Edelmann studied at the Duesseldorf Art Academy and became a freelance graphic designer in 1958.

In addition to his work on "Yellow Submarine," Edelmann designed many book covers, including the first German edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings."

In 1989, he won a competition to design the mascot of Seville's Expo '92 world fair, beating 23 other entries with his illustration of a pudgy bird with a rainbow plume and conical beak named Curro.

There was no immediate word on survivors or funeral arrangements.

This major career retrospective on Tim Burton (American, b. 1958), consisting of a gallery exhibition and a film series, considers Burton's career as a director, producer, writer, and concept artist for live-action and animated films, along with his work as a fiction writer, photographer and illustrator. Following the current of his visual imagination from his earliest childhood drawing through his mature work, the exhibition presents artwork generated during the conception and production of his films, and highlights a number of unrealized projects and never-before-seen pieces, as well as student art, his earliest non-professional films, and examples of his work as a storyteller and graphic artist for non-film projects. The opposing themes of adolescence and adulthood, and the elements of sentiment, cynicism, and humor inform his work in a variety of mediums—drawings, paintings, storyboards, digital and moving-image formats, puppets and maquettes, props, costumes, ephemera, sketchbooks, and cartoons. Taking inspiration from sources in pop culture, Burton has reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as a spiritual experience, influencing a generation of young artists working in film, video, and graphics.

Inventor Tim Kehoe has been searching for the elusive colored bubble for a long time. Through his experimentation he’s stained his eyes a deep blue, along with his car, his kitchen, and his bathtub (he’s also permanently stained the family dog). But in 2005, after 11 years and over $500,000 in funding, Kehoe successfully created a colored bubble that wouldn’t stain.

Yesterday, after an additional four years of refining the production process (and meeting with all manner of attorneys, scientists, and Fortune 100 companies)… Zubbles officially became available for pre-order.
